In the latest issue of Your Home and Garden NZ they have an article on how to achieve pale timber floor boards. I was delighted to contribute to a section on how to sand back your existing boards.

Sanding - How to achieve the pale scandi look

Sanding - How to achieve the pale scandi look

In our own home we had very orangey looking original pine boards. Once we had sanded back the boards in the bedroom wing we were thrilled with the light scandi colour and wanted to maintain that. Typically oil-based polyurethane goes orange over time (hence our lovely orange floor!) but we have used a water-based polyurethane which doesn't change colour so we will enjoy the lovely pale floors for years to come! We will be doing the rest of our floors in the living and kitchen rooms when we do our big kitchen renovation.

Here you can see the current transition from our bedroom wing hallway to the living and kitchen. What a difference removing that old oil-based polyurethane has made! Water-based all the way! Scary kitchen beyond to be renovated soon!

Make sure you check out the August issue of Your Home and Garden NZ for further information on the benefits of water-based polyurethane over oil-based. The article also has sections on Blonding, Painting and Whitewashing floor boards.

THE BEGINNING - OUR RENOVATION STORY

Our new home - it's a 70's style house, almost a queenslander with the living all up on the first level and a large covered deck.  We have fallen in love with the leafy neighbourhood, the cockatoo birds that visit everyday and the peace and quiet enjoyed on our aforementioned deck!

It needs a bit of love though - something I'm very excited to get stuck into! The kitchen is dated, and the living space adjacent has a funny layout. The bathroom has a large spa bath and not much space for anything else! The garden could do with a great makeover - I'm thinking stepped terraced gardens at the front, courtyard vibes at the back.

So far we have painted the walls (no more textured feature walls) and sanded back the floors in the bedroom wing. We will do the remainder of the floors when we update the kitchen/living space.

I will be sharing our journey from design concept through construction and to completion here. I hope you find this useful in planning your own renovations.
